He was predeceased by: his parents, James Cookson and Lela Cookson (Brown); his siblings, Almeda Compton, Lorena Richie, Billy Cookson and Jack Cookson; his parents-in-law, Charles and Ethel Smith; his brother-in-law Bill Smith; and his grandson Bryan Minor.

He is survived by: his daughter Rindy; his wife Joyce Cookson (Smith); his daughters, Rin Weddle (Jim), Jeannie Hearne (Brian), Karen Sweet (Jeff) and Kim Clevenger (John); his pets, Keeta, Alaskan Malamute and Katie; his grandchildren, Jimmy Weddle (Kristen), Chad Hearne (Jessica), Kyndal Dixon (David), Bryce Minor (Cassy), Jessica Savage (David), Jessica Meyer (John), Tyler Hearne (Anna), Cole Olibo, Jared Sweet and Loryn Weddle; his great grandchildren, Payson, Teryn, Aaron Weddle, Archer, Bronson, Zahna Savage, Charlie Hearne, Reese, Rylee Minor, Harlow Olibo, Norah Jane Dixon, Finn Sweet, Owen and Olliana Meyer; and his brother-in-law Kenneth "Buck" Smith.

In lieu of flowers-donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
