He was predeceased by: his parents, Michael Whelan and Florence Whelan (Dewey); his brother Gregory; his former wife Mary (Welsby); and his pet Ginger.
He is survived by: his wife Cathy; his children, Bridget Scheer (Tim), Michael Whelan (Lori), Sean Whelan (Cindy), Terrence Whelan (Renee) and Kathleen Heiss (Matthew); his grandchildren, Greg Scheer (Rachel), Clara Howell (Michael), Sarah Lowman (Connor), John Scheer, Shannon Carbonneau (Kevin), Megan Whelan, Cori Whelan (James Tran), Ryan Whelan, Matthew Whelan, Molly Whelan, Morgan Whelan and Mary Heiss; his great grandchildren, Carter Lowman, Joselyn Scheer and Baby Carbonneau; his sisters-in-law, Suzann Graefen, Jean Ladd (Jim) and Virginia Fuehrmeyer (Ken); and his pet Stormy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of the Calumet Area or to the Washington Island Sportsmen's Club.
