He was predeceased by : his sisters, Amalia Cortez and Kino Zambrano; his wife Esperanza; and his son Miguel. He is survived by : his children, Reynaldo Garcia, Irma Sustaita (Raymond), Xavier Garcia (Lisa), Hector and Roel Cortez; his grandchildren, Sara Hicks (Jerame), Jaime Sustaita (Melissa), Amanda Alexander (Phil), Miguel, Cyan, Roel Jr. (Sarah Ashley), Symone Cortez and Gabrielle Garcia; and his great grandchildren, Bianca Sustaita, Jaime, Jacob Sustaita, Andrew, Jacklyn Hicks and Melonie Esperanza Cortez. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Friday, April 26th 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Fife Funeral Home (4201 Indianapolis Blvd, East Chicago, IN 46312). A funeral service was held on Friday, April 26th 2024 at 7:15 PM at the same location.
