He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Shaum and Kathern Shaum (Stump); his siblings, Gwendolyn Shaum, Thelma Havens, Clifford Shaum and Virginia Mawhorter; and his son-in-law Brian Sturgis.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy V. Masterton; his son Donald Shaum Jr. (Jennifer) of Elkhart; his granddaughters, Donita, Andrea Milender (Josh) of Vandalia, MI and Kate (Jesse); and his brother Gordon Shaum of Granger, IN..
