He was predeceased by: his parents, Gilbert Theodore Schmitt and Josephine Yates; his sister Nancy Lehmann; his stepfather John Hahn, Sr.; and his brother John Hahn.

He is survived by: his wife Adele Sterneman Moore of Evansville; his children, Christopher Schmitt of Evansville, Sarah Weigman (Max) of Clarkrange, Tara Payne and Teea Schmitt of Boonville; and his stepchildren, Angie Hutchinson (Paul Schemmer) of Pennington, NJ, Stephanie Boler (Joe) of Williamsport, VA, Sam Rheinhardt (Vicki) of Millstone Twp and Rebecca Kehoe (Ryan) of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was an instructor in standard and in advanced first aid for the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association.
