He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl Thomas and Dorothy Gates (Baumgartner); and his stepfather Albert "Frosty" Crafton. He is survived by: his wife Judith D. Gates (Shaner); and his daughters, Andrea Reller (Todd) and Laurel Knapp. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
