He was predeceased by: his wife Earldine Axelson Chapin; his parents, Edward W. Chapin and Minnie S. Chapin; and his brothers, Edward "Ned" (Joan Chapin) and Lee (Carol Chapin).

He is survived by: his children, John D. Chapin IV of Grand Rapids, MI, Janice L. Chapin (Robert Stranzenbach) of Scotch Plains, NJ and James L. Chapin of Franklin, IN; his granddaughter Elizabeth Stranzenbach; his niece Rebecca Oakes (Douglas); his nephews, Paul Chapin (Peter) and Scott Chapin (Reka); Gordon Axelson (Anne) and Sharon Case.

He fought off COVID-19 but succumbed following surgery for a broken hip.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County.

“To the family of Jack, our sincere condolences. We really were blessed to get to know him. He was such a "witty" character, but also sometimes very serious! I suspect that he is in Heaven telling everyone to, "Just bring it on", as he would tell the young ladies in the Otterbein Dining Room. I guess that Jack will now allow me (Jess) to sit in his chair without grumbling at me! We certainly will miss him!”
