He was predeceased by: his parents, John Sr. McCarthy and Alice McCarthy (Maxwell); his brother Kevin McCarthy; and his wife Linda Fay McCarthy (Gunter). He is survived by: his daughters, Tammy Ballew (Carl McMurray) of Franklin and Heather Hurst (Jeff) of Roswell; his grandchildren, Chelsea Burton, Cassea Crawford, Cole Ballew, Kaitlyn McMurray and Olivia Forrest; his great grandchildren, Aubrey Smith, Emmalyn Crawford, Gunnar Wagoner, Jossette-Fay Ballew, Luka Wagoner and Athena Avita; and his siblings, Eileen McCarthy, Mike McCarthy and Tom McCarthy.
