He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Bartel and Dora Ewert Bartel; his parents-in-law, Lynn and Ethel Waltner Preheim; his brothers, Floyd, Alfred and Marvin; and his siblings-in-law, Pearl Schroeder Bartel, Dorothy Preheim, Gary Goertz, Kirk Preheim and Mark Osborne.

He is survived by: his wife Gwendolyn Preheim; and his siblings-in-law, Nina Preheim, Elizabeth Osborne, Anita Preheim, Justina Neufeld, Delores Bartel, William Preheim and Michael Preheim. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and Ewert cousins.

Called back to IN in 2005, he was the Director of Church Community Services in Elkhart until his retirement in 2011 due to Parkinson's disease.
