He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert Spear and Hattie Spear (Compton); his children, David Spear and Marsue Slinker; his son-in-law Richard Slinker; and his sister Patsy Duncan (Lawrence).

He is survived by : his wife Sandra; his sons, Jamie Hunter (Lucy) and Joey Hartwell (Katie); his brother Ed Tribby (Anita); and his grandchildren, Laurie Pierce (Matt), Leslie Davis (Nick), Gabby Hartwell, Eli Hartwell and Tyler Popp. He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
