He was predeceased by: his parents, Arlin Coy Payton and Lucy Ann Holt (Atwood); the mother of his children Cynthia Payton; and his siblings, Arlin David Payton, Linda Bledsoe (Dan), Shirley Thompson and Waymon "Bub" Holt.
He is survived by: his wife Dominga Gomez Payton; his children, Jeff Payton and Julie Babcock (Troy); his stepson Karlos Aquino Gomez; and his sisters, Carolyn Sue Miller and Della Dian Canon (David). He is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Hendryx Chapel (11636 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229). A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 at the Washington Park East Cemetery (10612 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229).
