He is survived by: his wife Patricia Ireland-Bates of Indianapolis; his children, Shelby Bates of Cairo and Dessa Bates of Indianapolis; his siblings, Wesley R. Bates of Cairo, John Robert Bates (Tracy) of Cairo and Diane Bates of Cairo; and his grandson Jeremiah Bates of Cairo. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
