“To the family of Donald Leffert, I was in the academy with Don, as well as our other past brother Don Howard, Marty Talbert was there at the same time, and Frank Dessing. We had some good times, laughs and memories. One special trip to return home in the blizzard, 1977/1978 because they were closing down the academy they said, (Kokomo, Walton) none of us had any real money, to find a hotel room in Plainfield, or money for meals for two nights. But, we had gasoline and determination to make it home. We did, after all kinds of turn arounds, road blocks, and another one in the group sliding off and spinning their car into the median on 465, just near St Vincent Hospital north now. But, we all made it home safely... probably 8 hours later. It was a joy and also an honor to met Don Leffert and later work with him from and ajoining county. Don was professional, knowledgable, and always willing to help me out with anything, and crinimal investigations. Many of us would meet, eat and fellowship at the Old County Line restaurant. Don was a warm giving man if you needed it and he had it, you could use it. He was just a swell guy! It seems like you know someone so long, and they are a friend, and you always have the intention to say hey let's get together have lunch etc. but time wait nor does it slow down for us. This is my regret that I did not take the time to visit more with a good old work friend. I also regret not knowing of visitation until it was over. I would have been there! When you retire, many departments don't forward the message of the deaths, I wish they all would. We have lost a truely good man, retired law enforcment officer, and friend. Rest in peace brother.”
