He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Nelson and Amy Nelson (Ricketts); and his children, Chris Schumacher and Cindy Schumacher (Mary E. Cole). He is survived by: his children, Amy Ross of Lafayette, Norma Jean Swann (Tom), Romeo Nelson, Ricardo Nelson (Pearl) and Jeff Schumacher of Wheatfield; his sister Iris Smith; and also, Dawn Warf and Michelle Hamm (Mark) of Lafayette.

Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
