“Bud was a great guy! Ever since I was a little kid, he was a dad-type figure at our church! My brothers and I knew that he had full authority to thump us in the back of the head if he caught us goofing off during church! I don’t remember ever getting thumped…but just a threat of it was a good deterrent! One time when I was home on leave Bud saw me, walked up, snapped to attention and rendered me a perfect salute…I felt the respect and that meant the world to me from a guy I respect so much!”
