He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Coates and Bertha Coates (McDowell); and his siblings, ImoJean Powell, Katherine Hunt, Doris Myers, Marjorie Price and Don Coates.
He is survived by: his son Larry Shane Coates (Cheryl); his granddaughters, Kristina Coates of Muncie and Morgan Belcher (Justin) of Muncie; his great grandchildren, Ezekiel Belcher and Zayden Belcher; his sister Carolyn Johnson (Daryl); and his close friend Dennis Faulk. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
