He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Smith and Pearl Irene Smith (Wiseman); his son Baby Emil Harold Smith; and his siblings, Kenneth, Wayne, Dale, Ray Smith, Edith Durfee and Vada Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Anne Smith; his children, David G. Smith (Gretchen), Joseph A. Smith (Heather), Susan M. Smith and Kathleen A. Yarnell (Robin); his grandchildren, Christopher (Tabitha), Monica, Harper, Hudson, Hadley Smith, Jacob, Abigail Yarnell, Michaela Stogdill (James), Allie Marks (Blake) and Chad Piatt (Ellie); his great grandchild Atticus; and his niece Janette Day (Bill).
