He was loved and cherished by many people including: his mother Bette Garlanger; his wife Dorothy Ann Nemeth; his stepchildren, Darcey (Demmitt), Tina and Scott Emerick; his granddaughters, Brittany (Dan Gulbranson) and Anna Demmitt; and also, Dorothy and Sigrid Gulbranson.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that all memorial contributions be made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Nappanee Missionary Church.
