He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Abernathy and Florence Abernathy (Abner); his sons, Mark Abernathy and Michael Abernathy; and his brothers, Ronnie Abernathy and Gene Abernathy.

He is survived by: his wife Audrey Abernathy of Rosedale; his daughters, Annette Loomis (Wayne) of Rosedale and Denise Hinshaw (Craig) of Tennessee; his daughter-in-law Valerie Abernathy of Florida; his grandchildren, Jason Abernathy (Amy), Jennifer Rackley (Chris), Sharon Montgomery (Jeremy), Ryan Loomis (Rachel) and Ashley Organ (Michael); and his stepgrandchildren, Craig Hinshaw (Kim), Nicole Bonham (Justin) and Brian Hinshaw (Brenda). He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild on the way; several nieces, nephews.
