He was predeceased by : his parents, Mary Cain (Atherton) and Lawrence Cain; his son Roger Cain; his former life partner Rosemary McCauley; his siblings, Ruth Ann (Bud Leavell), William (Jeanie), Lou (Coleen Cain) and Jerry Cain; his grandson Jeremy Cain; and his brothers-in-law, Elsworth Davidson (Mike) and Howard Miller (Les).

He is survived by : his children, Debbie Ripberger (Chris) of Glenwood, IN, Mark A. Cain of Shelbyville, IN and Jerry D. Cain of Stilesville, IN.; his stepsons, Jimmy Melton (Leslie) and Carl Melton (Terri); his daughters-in-law, Christy Dean Cain of Greenfield, IN and Jean Owens Cain of Rushville; his siblings, Elinor "Peage" Davidson of Oaklandon, IN, Nancy Miller of Lafayette, IN, Frank Cain (Earlene) of Oaklandon, IN and Jim Cain (Vicki) of Pomona, KS; and his sister-in-law Janice Cain of Knightstown, IN.. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
