He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Gilbert and Fannie Kennedy (Thomas); his wife Madeline (Weiss); his son Gary Bogard; his grandson Dustin Gilbert; and his siblings, Don, Jack, Wayne, Larry, Bill Gilbert and Cora Carter.
He is survived by: his children, Penny Wesling of Rushville, Brenda Bryant (Bob) of Rushville, John "Butch" Gilbert, Jr. of Orlando and Steven Dean Gilbert (Crissy) of Rushville; and his siblings, Vernon Gilbert (Helen) of Greenfield and Janice Wright of Rushville. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
