He is survived by: his son Peter D Bates; his sister Rachel Wyant (Bates) of Nappanee; his cousins, Maynard Ricker of South Bend, Katherine Connor (Ricker) of Seattle and Norma Williams (Birk) of Plymouth; and his wife Jean. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.
