He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Cottrell and Lois Hixon Cottrell; and his brother Joseph Cottrell Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Judy Kelley of Clinton; his pet Zoie; his son Brent Cottrell (Kelly DeCurtis-Cottrell) of Terre Haute; his grandchildren, Ryan Cottrell (Brittany), Bradley Cottrell (Mara) and Tyler Cottrell; his great grandchildren, Chandler, Mia, Avery, Jace, Johnara and Danny; his sibling's children, Ashlee Sherey (Jason), Jaylee, Thomas and Nolan Sherey; his daughter-in-law Lesli Wells; his friends, Larry Woody, Harold Wesley, Dale York and Harold Tharp; and also Maggie DeCurtis. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
