He is survived by: his son Gerald "Curtis" Bates; his siblings, Alan Bates (Judy) and Linda Pilkenton; his grandchildren, Braleigh, Lucas, Dylan, Bradley, Nevaeh Bates, Kora and Kade Rutkowski; his cousin Alan Short; his aunt Minnie Ellen; and his pet Rocky.
