He was predeceased by: his parents, William "Wally" Cates and Veeda Mae Cates; and his brothers, Gary Cates and Mike Cates. He is survived by: his wife Buttons Cates; his children, J. Kelly Cates (Ragia), Kirt Cates (Honey) and Lee Jay Cates (Leah); his grandchildren, Mallory Cates, Brooklyn Reavis, Taylor Cates Onyett, Jaquelyn Cates, Elizabeth Cates, Jaymon Cates, Michael Cates, Stone Cates, Zakk Cates, Ali Lester and Farah Elshapine; his great grandchildren, Brynna Grayce Thompson, Sawyor Thompson, Wyatt Thompson, Tucker Thompson, Sophia Poselwait, Noah Poselwait, Liam Poselwait, Alex Ray Reavis, River Mosly, Adam Onyett, Lilly Onyett and Gavin Onyett; his brothers, Ted Cates (Peggy) and Bob Cates (Michelle); and his sister-in-law Dianna Hume. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7th 2025 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home (323 N Main St, Oakland City, IN 47660). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 7th 2025 at 12:30 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Thursday, August 7th 2025 at the Sunset Cemetery Pike County (Winslow, IN).
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
