He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Smith and Elizabeth Smith (Heck); his sister Mary Mae Lockwood; and his granddaughter Kandra Bird. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Smith; his daughters, Janet Davidson of Independence, Sharon Melander of Havana, Linda Raggio (Bobby Hendricks) and Donna Bird (David) of Independence, Kansas; and his grandchildren, Lea Sprague (Stephen), Jeff Davidson, Sara Owens (Mike), Mikelynn Allen (Jeff), Kay Kelly (Bryan), Mikel "Gus" Melander, Karlie Melander, Kit Bird and Tye Bird. He is also survived by eleven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Wayside Christian Church.
