He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thomas Herken and Agnes Martha Herken (Schmidt); his wife Virginia Wilbourn; his siblings, Joseph Francis Herken, Bernadette Agnes Chmidling, Kenneth Leon Herken, Thomas Joseph Herken, Helen Theresa Rowland, Mary Louis Gwartney and Richard Franklin "Bubba" Herken; his son-in-law Kent Nelson; and his great grandchild Drake Herken.
He is survived by: his children, Margie Kirby (Kerry) of San Antonio, TX and James T. Herken III (Kelly) of Easton, KS; and his grandchildren, Justin Nelson (Kelly), Evan Herken (Adina), Jordan Nelson (Courtney), Kelsey Burdiek (Bryce) and Madison Hightower (James). He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Saturday, August 23rd 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Davis Funeral Chapel (531 Shawnee St, Leavenworth, KS 66048). A funeral service was held on Saturday, August 23rd 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A graveside service was held on Saturday, August 23rd 2025 at 12:30 PM at the Round Prairie Cemetery (21370 Roe Rd, Atchison, KS 66002).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Potter Community Church.
