He was predeceased by : his parents, William Backhus and Martha Backhus (Meyer); his siblings, Vic Backhus, Alvin Backhus, Martin Backhus, Emma Paulson and Mildred Bernhardt; and his son-in-law Tom Reid.

He is survived by : his wife Edna Backhus of Tampa; his children, Brad Backhus of Tampa and Bev Reid; his sisters, Ruth Taylor, Alice Yoachum and Lydia Evans; his grandchildren, Jennifer Jay (Mike) and Jason Backhus (Alisha); and his great grandchildren, Cody Jay, Emery Jay and Tucker Backhus. He is also survived by 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
