He was predeceased by: his parents, Pat Hanson and Shirley Hanson; his sister Sue Ann; and his former wife Sue Steiner Hanson. He is survived by: his wife Susan Barker; his children, John (Deanna) and Carol; his grandchildren, Rylee, Ashlyn, Joshua, Caleb, Jonathan, Molly, Macy and Carter; his sisters, Sheryl (Jim) and Linda; and his siblings' children, Emily, Nick (Molly) and Steven. He is also survived by his wife, family and friends.

“In fond memory of Basehor-Linwood USD 458 math mentor Mr. Hanson, who started helping struggling high school kids in November 2022 right up to a week before he died. His booming voice calling out instructions, and the kids giving full attention. They laughed when they answered, and high fived when the assignment was completed. In his interview, he told me, he wanted to live a life of purpose, and asked me, "what ya got for me?". I didn't realize it was a short time. Godspeed Mr. Hanson.”
