He was predeceased by: his parents, Felix Charles "Charley" and Rose Madeline Van Schoelandt (De Smet). He is survived by: his stepdaughter Maria Preston-Cargill (Schaen); his children, Charles Van Schoelandt (Candice) and Anna Douglas-Rose (Michael); his grandchildren, Hawk and Fox; his sister Charlene (Chuck); and his sibling's children, Tim Soetaert, Chris Soetaert (Aubrie), Elizabeth Hinrichs (Greg), Kathy McNew (Vernon) and Joanne Vaughan (Morgan).
Visitation was held on Monday, September 29th 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Saint John the Evangelist Church (1234 Kentucky St, Lawrence, KS 66044). A funeral service was held on Monday, September 29th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Monday, September 29th 2025 at 11:45 AM.
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to remember John through memorial contributions to Lawrence Inter-denominational Food Kitchen (LINK) which he and Mary supported during their all-too-brief time together in Lawrence after relocating there in November 2024 to be closer to their children.
