Fred Dattel Obituary

Fred Dattel, 82, of Leawood, KS passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 29. 2023, following several months of declining Parkinson's.

Fred was born on January 31, 1941, in Evanston, Ill. He is the youngest child of Fred and Alice Dattelzweig. Fred's father thought he would take on his dentist practice so he shortened the name to Dattel to make it easier for patients.

Fred graduated from Evanston High School and then went on to the University of Colorado in Boulder. Snow skiing and being on the ski patrol were passions of his. Fred met Margie here during summer school in 1962.

His beautiful smile and friendliness that Margie loved about him helped put the rescued skiers more at ease.

Fred and Margie were married on March 30, 1964, and were married for 59 years.

They settled in Lakewood, Colorado where he took flight lessons. He was hired by TWA June 3, 1966, as a flight engineer and retired January 31, 2001, in Kansas City, as a Captain at the age of 60, on the Boeing MD80, his favorite plane. Their home on Lake Quivira is where he enjoyed sailing, golfing, and being a volunteer firefighter. Four years later, Fred moved his family to Leawood South. Together Fred and Margie raised their three children, Scott, David and Heidi. Fred enjoyed vacations with the family including traveling, cruises, and enjoying their place at the Lake of the Ozarks, where he spent time teaching his children to water ski and entertaining many friends for a fun time at the lake.

Fred was always there to help his neighbors in Leawood South, from putting in sprinkler systems, plumbing and even delivering puppies.

His passions included being with his children coaching their basketball teams, helping with boy scout camps, volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital, enjoying a round of golf, feeding the birds and waiting for his favorite author's next book.

Fred was immensely proud of his children and his 4 grandchildren. They all were a very important part of his life. Fred was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Fred is survived by his wife Margie Dattel of the home; son, Dr. Frederick Scott Dattel (Karin); daughter, Heidi Hazelwood (Darrin); 4 grandchildren Kara, Tiffany, Cole, Ashley; 2 great-grandchildren, Saylor, Luca; countless cousins, nieces, nephews and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Alice Dattelzweig; son, David.

A memorial service and A celebration of life will be decided at a later date.

Memorial contributions are with the Parkinson's Exercise and Wellness Center 3665 W. 95th St. Overland Park, Kansas 66206.
