He was predeceased by : his parents, Edwin Nelson and Mary Nelson (O'Brien); his wife Kathy Nelson; and his grandson Tyler Andrew Nelson. He is survived by : his sons, Michael E. Nelson, II (Marion), Mark E. Nelson and Matthew E. Nelson; his grandsons, Michael Nelson, III, Tanner Nelson and Luke Nelson; and his sisters, Lynn Black (Bill) and Pattie Farrell. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Cure of Ars Catholic Church.
