He was predeceased by: his parents, T. H. VanDiest and Helen VanDiest (Bennett); his parents-in-law, Virg and Irene Hardiek; and his siblings-in-law, Bill Nuernberger, Rick Hardiek, Danny McMillin, Kay Berls (Jerry) and Rhonda Frack.
He is survived by: his wife Pat of Norton, Kansas.; his children, Teresa Akin (Danny) of Thornton, Colorado and Greg VanDiest (Denise) of Eudora, Kansas; his sister Marian Nuernberger of Lincoln, Nebraska; and his siblings-in-law, Roger Hardiek (Bev) of Norton, Kansas, Jim Frack of Norton, Kansas, Lisa Hardiek of Las Vegas, Connie Dreyer (Roger) of Hays, Kansas and Cathy McMillin of Hays, Kansas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Arthritis Foundation, in lieu of flowers.
