He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred A. Umscheid and Helen G. Umscheid (Paris); his brother Alfred "Bud" (Pat Umscheid); and his wife Esther I. Umscheid (Graves). He is survived by: his children, Kenneth Umscheid, Rebecca Frakes (Kevin) and Timothy Umscheid (Jeanna); his foster children, Kelly Hearn (Susan) and Karin Stoner (Paul); his grandchildren, Christopher Umscheid, Victoria Umscheid, Clayton Frakes, Virginia Umscheid, Macie Sercer (Frakes), Michael Umscheid, Allison Umscheid, KC Hearn, Ashly Schuerman (Hearn), Emma Weber (Stoner) and Ryan Stoner; his great grandchildren, Agnes Sercer, Billy Schuerman and Katie Schuerman; and his brothers, Darrell Umscheid (Deborah) and Kelly Umscheid (Nancy). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial contributions in memory of Clay are suggested the Seven Dolors Catholic Church or the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
