He was predeceased by: his parents, John Burns and Hester Burns (Moore); his son William Norman Burns II (Billy); the mother of his children Barbara Burns (Hord); his siblings, Peg Holtzman, Mary Hoffman, Sarah Mitchell and Jack Burns; and his stepson Antony Rutherford.

He is survived by: his daughters, Melissa Closz (Michael), Kelly Loyd (Billy) and Christy Burns; his granddaughters, Caitlin Closz and Briana Loyd; his wife Judy Church; and his stepdaughter Megan Rutherford (James MacRae).

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Tunnel to Towers.
