He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Sr. Gardner and Shirley Gardner; his brothers, Joseph Jr. and Johnny Gardner; and his granddaughter Lily Wires.

He is survived by: his wife Elena Gardner of Tecumseh; his daughter Susan Wessel (Nathaen) of Topeka; his granddaughters, Harley and Makenzie Wires of Topeka; his stepgrandchildren, Rylie and Andrew Wessel; his stepson Kenny Gardner (Shelly); his stepgrandson Hunter Gardner of Springfield, MO.; and his sisters, Linda Kerr (Bob) of Baldwin City and Shirley Leach (Dave) of Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the St. Judes Children's Hospital.
