It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Charlene Marie Appelhanz of Topeka, Kansas, who passed away on November 7, 2025, at the age of 79, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Richard Sawazhki and Cora Younger; her husband Richard; her children, Cindy Riggs (Arlen), Richard Appelhanz (Jean), Amy Manrose, Anne Escalante (Tony), Anthony Appelhanz (Shana) and Mary Reece (Micah); and her brothers, Richard Sawazhki (Ann) and Michael Sawazhki. She was also cherished by fifteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 12th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Brennan Mathena Funeral Home (800 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, KS 66603). A rosary will be held on Wednesday, November 12th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, November 13th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church (312 NE Freeman Ave, Topeka, KS 66616). A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 13th 2025 at 1:30 PM at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery (801 SW Westchester Rd, Topeka, KS 66606).
Memorial contributions can be made in Charlene's memory to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 312 NE Freeman Ave., Topeka, KS 66616 in care of the funeral home.
