He was predeceased by : his parents, Karl Krause and Lottie Elizabeth Grotheer (Gragg); and his half-sister Rebecca. He is survived by : his wife Laura York Shank; his sons, Vincent John "VJ" Grotheer (B. J.) of Pittsburg, Kurt Grotheer (Linda) of McCune and Jacob Grotheer (Sylvia) of Weir, Kansas; his stepdaughters, Hannah Anderson (Sean) of Frontenac, Sarah Shank of Weir and Jessica Shank (Guido Ascanio) of Weir, Kansas; his siblings, Martin Grotheer, MD of Miami, Oklahoma, Phyllis Gaylor of Weir, KS, Jane Crane of Grand Lake, Elaine Phelps (Ron) of Ft. St and Marlena Bolt of Weir, Kansas; his grandchildren, Briston Kapler, Lydia, Sadie Grotheer, Jayden Lyric Jarvis, Lucy, Nora, Greta Anderson, Langston and Dottie Kay Hardwick; his niece Lydia; his nephews, Patrick and Will; and his extended family, Derek Scholes (Autumn), Shelby Scholes (Dani), Sara Scholes and Brent Scholes.
