He was predeceased by : his father Joel Jefferson Cates; and his sister Judy Cates Taylor. He is survived by : his wife Nanita Cates (Cassady); his children, Joel Ross Cates, Bonnie Cates Nicks (Frank), Patricia Cates Grady (Mark) and JoAnn Cates Powell (Terry); his grandchildren, Hannah Nicks, Jacob Nicks (Laura), Riley Crabb (Justin), Terence Powell and Cassady Powell; and his great grandchildren, Kyran Nicks, Jacob Crabb, Tyler Crabb, Nora Nicks and Bo Alvin Nicks. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
