He was predeceased by: his parents, John Orville and Cleo Philpot Gross; his wife Callie Couch Gross; his children, Bobby Gross, James Gross Jr. and Carolyn Lewis (Gross); his siblings, Kenneth, Orville, Kelly, Charles, Lester, Lloyd, Fred, William, Floyd Gross, Ruby Cobler, Baye Gross and Viola Gross; his parents-in-law, Chester and Stella Couch; his grandchildren, Valerie Lewis and Rodney Gross; and his great grandchild Christian James Griffith.
He is survived by: his children, Dean Gross (Janie) of Baxter, Sue Baker (Dexter) of Bledsoe, Gary Gross of Bledsoe and Paul Gross (Kannie) of Bledsoe; his son-in-law Billy Ray Lewis of Bledsoe; his brother John Gross (Susan) of Dayhoit; his grandchildren, James Griffith (Devin), Jerry Griffith (Aprille), Amy Maas (Brian), Becca Gross, Bobby Gross (Crystal), Hanna Slusher (Sam), Cassie Farley and Olivia Collins (Mike); and his great grandchildren, Callie Griffith, Caleb Griffith, Kaitlin Griffith, Kylie Griffith, Conner Griffith, Hailee Ball, Jacob Gross, Destiny Braasch, Alexis Seal, Bella Slusher, Brandon Collins, Brooklyn Burkhart and Arianna Briant. He is also survived by eight great-great grandchildren, and a host of other special family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 17th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Home (122 N Cumberland Ave, Harlan, KY 40831). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 17th 2026 at 7:00 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Sunday, October 18th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Couch Cemetery (6650 State Hwy 221, Bledsoe, KY 40810).
