He is survived by: his wife Patsy Stevens Simpson; his son James Cannon Simpson, Jr. (Amy) of Bardstown; his siblings, Sister Grace, Martha Wolf of Elizabethtown, Elizabeth Simpson of Bloomfield, Bryon R. Simpson II of Louisville, Pat Simpson of Fairfield and Mike Simpson (Ann Lindle) of Bloomfield; and his grandchildren, James Cannon Simpson III and Eleanor Kathleen "Nora Kate" Simpson.
