He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Katherine; and his half-brother Cecil Ritchie (Margaret Ritchie). He is survived by: his wife Louise Fryman Gates; his stepsons, Thomas Glenn Salyer, Jr. (Jenny) and Tony Martin Salyer (Debbie); and his grandchildren, James Thomas Salyer and Cayce Salyer Abellard.
After having a stroke and spending 42 days in Nashville hospitals, it was determined that Jim had Parkinson's disease.
