He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Melvage and Nina Lindsey Poteet; and his brothers, Joseph Melvage Poteet, Jr. and Gerald Ray Poteet. He is survived by: his wife Rita Logsdon Poteet; his son John Christopher Poteet (Shae) of Brownsville; his granddaughter Haley Poteet; his stepgranddaughters, Hannah Grace and Ella Rickard; and his sister Billie Ann McDougle.
