First Sergeant John Frederick Gerding, born on May 20, 1946 in Dayton, Kentucky, passed away on September 9, 2026. First leaves behind family members and others who acknowledge this loss. First leaves behind cherished memories for friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. First’s life was marked by connections and experiences that touched those around him. Though he is no longer with us, the moments shared, the laughter, and the support he offered will continue to resonate. All who knew First will carry forward his memory in their hearts.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert C. Gerding and Viola Gerding (Bley); and his sister Bonnie Jean Gerding. He is survived by: his wife Carla Gerding (Batts); his sons, Robert Duncan Gerding (Victoria) and John Andrew Gerding; his grandsons, John Kendrick "Jack" Gerding and William Berryman "Will" Gerding; and his sister Joyce Ann Kellen (Walt).

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Campbellsburg Baptist Church (8320 Main St, Campbellsburg, KY 40011). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 19th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
