He was predeceased by: his parents, Abraham Lincoln "Link" and Lettie Trammell Pennington; his siblings, Ethel Parks, Amy Combs, Nadine Carr, Cloteen Pennington, Evan, Harold, Link "Junior" and Gearl Pennington; and his daughter Denise Dawn Pennington.

He is survived by: his wife Shelby Thurston Pennington; his son Christopher Pennington; his brothers, Charles Pennington, Earl Pennington (Mary) and Walter Pennington; and his siblings-in-law, Billy Jack Thurston (Juanita), Delores Higgins (Glen) and Glenda Brinker. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
