He was predeceased by: his parents, Alton "Junior" Dunning and Tommie Love Dunning. He is survived by: his wife Gloria Melton Dunning of Dawson Springs, KY; his children, Christy Messamore, B. J. Newberry of Princeton, KY and Kerry Melton of Oklahoma; his stepchildren, Amanda Paul of Princeton, KY, Jason Brent of Russellville, KY, Beth Dunbar of Dawson Springs, KY and Jessica Wood of Madisonville, KY; and his siblings, Alton Dunning, Daphne Johnson (Eddie), Rita Smith (Dunning), Beverly Linville (Troy) and Stacey Guill (John). He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
