He was predeceased by: his parents, John Bird and Francis Bird (Kramer); his wife Doris Jeanne Bird (O'Bryan); and his daughter Debbie Bird Speier. He is survived by: his children, Gilbert "Rusty" Bird (Diana), Rebecca Van Dame and James John Bird. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
