He was predeceased by: his parents, Haywood Johnston and Frances Johnston; his former wife Shirley Stratton Johnstone; and his daughter Robin Johnstone. He is survived by: his wife Ernestine Johnstone; his children, Sonny Johnstone (Ellen) of Charleston, WV and Beth Johnstone Markham; his stepchildren, Jeff Scott of Danville, KY and Jenny Scott (Brian Kindel) of Richmond, KY; his grandchildren, Chase Markham, Cameron Johnstone, Charlie Johnstone and Jack Johnstone; and his stepgrandchildren, Brandon Scott, Morgan Kindel and Sophie Kindel.

The family suggest that memorials be made to the Dare County.
