He is survived by: his wife Vanessa Carmichael of Maple Grove, MN; his siblings, Patricia Leavell of Lexington, KY, David Hill (Jessie) of Lexington, KY, Betty Gayle Combs (Bill) of Hazard, KY and Thomas Combs (Rebecca) of Manchester, KY; his former wife Katherine Carmichael Grenz (Merle) of Louisville, KY; his children, James Carmichael Jr. (Terry) of Junction City, KY, David Carmichael of Hazard, KY, Robert Carmichael of Hazard, KY, Kathryn Feshia Carmichael of Louisville, KY, Brett Carmichael of Maple Grove, MN, Brianne Carmichael of Maple Grove, MN and Jonathan Williams (Tina) of Maple Grove, MN; and his nephew Paul Hamilton Lexington (Sherry). He is also survived by nieces, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandchildren, cousins, and friends.
