He was predeceased by : his parents, Milton Sumpter and Stella Sumpter; his wife Ella Rose Sumpter; his children, Randy Sumpter and Linda Lou Sumpter; and his siblings, Sherman Blackburn, Jack Sumpter, Robert "Bob" Sumpter, Wilda Vest and Virginia Brobst.

He is survived by : his children, Gary Lee Sumpter (Janet) of Louisa, KY, Samuel Lee Sumpter, Jr. (Loretta) of Tomahawk, KY, Greta Gay Blackburn (Don) of Inez, KY. and Sandiena Howard (Melvin) of Inez, KY.. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
